Pledging Acceptance

When you think of college, the Greek system usually comes to mind. Whether you are in it or not, it's there. If you are in it, it is probably the best memory of college - all of the parties, making new friends, new experiences. But if you are not in it, you still know what is happening because you probably have friends who are apart of it or you may just overhear groups of guys or girls talking about their latest adventures.

I was not in the Greek system. Neither of my sisters were actually. I lived at home and I think the Greek life would be most enjoyed if you lived on campus. I was fine not participating, because I was able to focus more on my studies. Although, I did have several friends who were active members. However, to me, it seemed like I was more apart of it than I was because of a show I indulged myself in. I really liked watching the ABC family show, "Greek."

Unfortunately, the series is now over after having several seasons, but I do have something to remember it by. I saw on Twitter a contest to win props from the show and I did! But props are not the only thing I got from the show. I found myself being able to relate to the characters and their lives, and certain things they said would have a deeper meaning with me. One quote in particular stuck out.

"The hard part isn't choosing, it's living with the choice you've made." - Greek

So this quote, when referring to the show, may happen to be choosing which boy to fall in love with, but for me, it had a much deeper meaning. When looking at life, there are so many choices to be made. Whether that be picking out what shoes to wear today, what college to go to or what time to leave the house, you are always forced to make a decision. Of course some decisions are more life changing than others, but that doesn't mean there is going to be less of them to make.

When starting college, you are expected to know what path you wish to choose. Sure, several students pick a generic path and choose later, but that usually sets them behind in graduation by at least a semester or a year. I did not want to graduate any later than my four years. I wish that high school prepared students more on what majors were and how you could have careers in them. I chose my major because my sister had graduated in it and loved what she was doing. I talked to her about it and decided I should do it too because we had similar interests. I made the decision very quickly and that decision has affected the rest of my life.

But this isn't just me. This is every single college graduate. What they choose when they start their college career will guide them in their professional careers and lives. It may require some to move to new places and leave their families or it may force some to return to school and choose a new path because they realized what they picked wasn't for them.

As for me, I am a college graduate, and am ready to accept my future and pursue my professional career. I am satisified with what I have chosen and most importantly, I am happy. I made my decision to stick with this major and now I am ready to live with it. My sister is still very happy with her choice in major and I am ready to accept my future. One. Step. At. A. Time.

Ignore Your Watch

I love movies. And when I say I love movies, I mean that I watch at least one every day. If I miss a day, I make up for it by watching two the next day. I can rewatch the same one over and over in a row if I like it enough. I love movies. I get a lot out of them.

It's safe to say that I pick up a lot of my favorite quotes from movies. Today's movie was one I had never seen before. I noticed Nicolas Cage was in it (and above would be a picture of me and the wax Nicolas Cage) and I love him as an actor, so I watched him in "Next." I like movies that play with your mind and this one did since he could see the two minutes into the future. There was one quote that he said just a few minutes into the movie that stuck out to me, and then he said it again at the very end. That just means it has double significance.

"Here's the thing about the future. Everytime you look at it, it changes. Because you looked at it. And that changes everything else." - Nicolas Cage, "Next"

When you see the quote in the context of the movie, it makes sense because he can see into the future. But I kept saying it to myself and thought about it in a different way. We all try to make a plan for our lives. Whether that be setting an alarm clock, going to college or knowing exactly how long you should date a guy before getting engaged. It took me until recently to figure out that plans don't work. They don't. What is supposed to happen will.

I had an internship at Walt Disney World after college, but since I've been home from there, I've been applying to jobs. While in college, I had a plan of where I was going to live, where I would work and who my friends would be. But to say that my plans did not work out doesn't make me disappointed. It just sets up new opportunities for me. I never planned to work at Disney, I had planned to move away. But if I didn't go there, I never would have met the best people in the world. I also never would have learned to drive a train or taken a trip to Puerto Rico.

One decision can have such an impact on your future. If you set your alarm clock one minute past when you should, that could make you not find a parking spot at school or make you an hour late for class (I would know!).

Just know that when you are thinking too much into the future, things can pass you by in the present. So as for my job applying, I know it'll work out. It'll work out when it's time to work out. But for now, I will keep taking helpful tips from Nicolas Cage.

Words for a Change

What changed? I often ask myself this question. Sure, I can make up an answer, but it's usually just empty words used as an excuse. What changed, really? Nothing. Maybe a lot.

I've decided to change this blog around to focus on quotes. Of course there are those famous quotes that you hear on a daily basis or ones you recognize when reading, but those are the ones that do not change me. Those familiar quotes are ones that you already know the meaning to because society has told you what it is. I like the quotes that are not meant to be thought about more than the moment you read them in a book or hear them on a movie or television show. I like the quotes that I have to stop and think about. That's when it starts to change me.

Yes, I keep telling myself I need to blog, but I never knew what to blog about. It was yesterday that sparked this new topic for me. Okay, I will admit that although I am out of college, I still love being a kid. I am sorry for those grown-ups that have no kid left in them. So the kid in me still loves to watch Disney channel, and there was a new movie that premiered called "Radio Rebel." I wasn't really looking forward to watching it because I was afraid I was "too old" for it, but oh my cupcakes, it was so inspiring! This movie stars Debby Ryan, and she did a phemoninal job. Go ahead and laugh at me for being so touched by a Disney Channel movie, but it wasn't just aimed at kids, it was aimed for anyone in society who is afraid to be themselves or step out of the boundaries to speak up for themselves or what they believe in.

After the movie was over, I went to my phone to write down a quote that I liked from it. Then I realized what this new blog would be based off of. Over the past year, I have been documenting quotes that stick out to me. By adding this new quote, I realized that I can use these quotes in my blog to draw inspiration to not only me, but share them with the world and hope it inspires someone just as it did me.

So I am going to give you homework. Don't go looking for quotes - let them come to you. Then write them down. Put them on your mirror to inspire you.

To leave you now, I am going to share the quote from the inspirational Disney Channel movie, "Radio Rebel."

"We have no idea what we are capable of." - Radio Rebel

Do what you think you can't. Do what you never thought was possible. You just may surprise yourself.
